‘My husband was innocent and had nothing to do with what happened to him’

The girlfriend and common law wife of Edwin Monroig, who was shot and killed outside of the 777 Deli & Grocery at East Tremont Avenue and St. Raymond’s Avenue on July 28, is speaking out about what happened.
The 34-year-old Monroig had stopped at the deli for a sandwich after work and before walking home, when he was shot.
A police source said at the time, “An unidentified individual approached a 34-year-old victim from behind and shot him in the back of the head, before fleeing the location on foot.”
Julio Pena, 35, was in custody within days of the NYPD releasing mugshots of the suspect.
Monroig’s heartbroken widow, Fiona Johnson, stated, “I would like the people to know that my husband was innocent and had nothing to do with what happened to him. He wasn’t a gang member, he didn’t have any problems with anyone.”
She added, “I just want answers on why did that man do this to him for no reason. Why?”
Meanwhile, a witness to the 777 Deli shooting, who claimed Pena turned himself into police, also claims that Pena was known to hang out at the Tequila MexCal NY, a bar located steps away from the most recent deli shooting that’s seven blocks away from the 777 Deli.
One police source stated that the fatal shooting was not linked to another shooting and were unrelated. The source could not speak to the possibility that Monroig was shot in a case of mistaken identity.
