NYC Sand Spreader Fatally Strikes Woman

Fatal Hit-n-Run in Mott Haven 

BRONX– A woman crossing the street in Mott Haven was fatally struck by a sanitation sand spreader early today, police say. 

At around 6:30 am on January 8, the woman was crossing Willis Avenue and East 138 Street, when she was struck by the sanitation vehicle as it made a turn onto Northbound Willis Avenue. 

Witnesses said the sand spreader kept driving.

Responding EMS declared the woman dead at the scene. 

A preliminary investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that a 2007 NYC Sanitation Sand Spreader was the vehicle that fatally struck the victim. 

According to published reports the driver of the sanitation vehicle has not been charged. Police say they are still investigating and sanitation officials are conducting their own investigation.
