Bronx Man has Stand-off with NYPD
By David Greene
A small army of police, fire officials and paramedics closed off Middletown Road at Crosby Avenue in Pelham Bay, after an emotionally disturbed individual, reportedly brandishing a knife– held cops at bay for more than an hour.
At just before 11 a.m., on Thursday, June 27, police were called to a disturbance in a second-floor apartment at 3004 Middletown Road. Police took their time, not knowing if the individual had a hostage inside the apartment or not.
Members of the NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit (ESU) deployed a pair of air-bags, in case the man attempted to jump from an apartment window. Members of the NYPD’s Technical Assistance Response Unit (TARU) used a drone to look inside the apartment’s windows.
One employee from Amber Nails across the street, stated, “They said some guy locked himself in the apartment with a knife or something.”
Offering few details, police reported that the man was taken into custody at 12:24 p.m., without incident and no injuries were reported. The man was transported to a local hospital for psychological evaluation.
An employee of the 3-D Imaging Services who operates one of the two storefronts on the ground floor, claimed they were not open at the time of the incident and did not know the individual. A person answering the phone at the Allied Mortgauge Group, the second storefront business at the location, declined to speak on the matter.
