Deadly White Plains Road Claims a Life
By Dan Gesslein
BRONX– Police are looking for the driver who struck a Soundview pedestrian who later died of his injuries.
The man was struck in broad daylight as he crossed White Plains Road and Gleason Avenue on April 29. Cops say the victim, 45-year-old Sergio Gutierrez, was attempting to cross White Plains Road mid block when he was struck by a black sedan.
Gutierrez was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center where he hung un until succumbing to his injuries on May 3.
Cops say the driver of the sedan did not remain at the scene while Gutierrez lay in the street suffering from head trauma. Instead the black sedan sped off.
For decades that stretch of White Plains Road has been known as a dangerous street. Drivers from cabbies to pedestrians and delivery trucks race down this stretch of roadway. The block is more reminiscent in length to a Manhattan block than a residential street.Pedestrians frequently try to cross in the middle of the street rather than taking the long hike to a corner crosswalk.
